Come discover the beauty and intricacy of Celtic knots! Participants of all ages and abilities will learn basic Celtic knot-tying techniques using recycled and donated shoe strings.

Corey will teach a workshop covering his approach to Irish traditional music and modern ballad singing using the guitar for both melody and accompaniment. Participants should bring their own instruments and be familiar with some basic chords and notes. 20 person maximum.

This fun fiddle workshop is geared for kids or adults who are new to Celtic music and may be new to learning by ear. This workshop is suitable for players with at least one year of violin experience.

Beginners from all the workshops and their teachers are invited to play through the tunes they learned and experience what it’s like to play with others in this fun, easy-going session.

James will teach you a simple Celtic tune on the tinwhistle (key of D). No experience necessary! You can either bring your own or use a new one that is provided for this class. 20 person maximum.

No experience? No Drum? No Problem! This class is suitable for beginners age 14+. We will cover the mechanics of playing the traditional Irish frame drum and learn a basic reel pattern, as well as drum and tipper selection, history, and musicality. Bring your own drum or borrow one of ours! 20 person maximum.

This class is suitable for drummers who can play basic jig and reel patterns. Bringing your own drum is highly recommended. In this workshop, we’ll explore a wide variety of playing techniques, as well as tips for increasing speed and developing the many tones that this dynamic instrument can produce. 20 person maximum.

David will provide historical context for seven types of Irish singing and show how English and Continental music influenced the indigenous Irish music styles (and you’ll sing some of the songs). 20 person maximum.

Have you always wanted to play the Celtic harp? Here is your opportunity! Harps are fun and easy to play. No experience is necessary to play beautiful music on traditional harps of al l sizes. In this informal workshop you’ll have a chance to chat with all of the Celtic harp players and ask questions about their instruments and their music.

Maura will teach the melody to an Irish tune. She’ll then then discuss ways to expand on the existing melody by creating a harmony line, or “second fiddle” part.

Conor will present right hand techniques and grooves for different types of Irish and Scottish tunes and discuss harmonic movement within traditional tunes. He’ll teach out of Drop-D tuning, but will accommodate players in DADGAD or standard tuning, demonstrating different approaches to understanding and visualizing the fretboard and suggesting approaches for session playing.

James and Laura will present an advanced Celtic flute workshop focusing on breathing, tone, expression, nuance, and technique.

Come learn a few dance steps you can break out while you are listening to the music at the festival. Irish 7’s and 3’s, the first step of The Highland Fling, and a few Cape Breton step dance steps. No experience needed – just a sense of fun. Wear soft tennis shoes, ballet or jazz shoes. David Greenberg will play the music for the class.

Do you play with others or in a band? Rakish will discuss their process of arranging music and describe how to make arrangements that are unique, tell a good story, and are satisfying to play!

The fiddle style of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, represents an unbroken, living tradition from the Scottish Highlands of the 18th century. David will share his passion and fluency in this music to help you get the driving rhythms and wild inflections that infuse this elusive and infectious fiddle style.
